Brief description/ Remarks:

Plants require nitrogen in large quantities, as it is a vital component of life building blocks like proteins, nucleic acids, and other cellular constituents. The abundant availability of nitrogen in the earth’s atmosphere (nearly 80% in the form of N2 gas) cannot be used directly by biological systems to produce chemicals for growth and reproduction. Fixation of atmospheric nitrogen is facilitated by Diazotrophs. They improve soil fertility and increase the plant growth extensively. Considering the importance of biological nitrogen fixation, the Faculty of Life Sciences has organized an online International Webinar entitled “Enhancing nitrogen fixing bio-fertilizer through diazotrophic biofilms & synthetic biology” on 20th July 2020 for the university students, research scholar, researchers and faculty members across the world. The key speaker for the event wass a renowned Scientist of the same field, Dr. Jȍrg Schumacher, Research Fellow, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Department of Life Sciences, Imperial College London, UK.

The basic objective of this webinar was to provide awareness about Diazotrophs as efficient plant growth promoters for increasing the yield of great quality. Initially, Dr. Shekhar Jain, Head, Faculty of Life Sciences, briefed about the speaker and expressed gratitude to the Dr. Jȍrg Schumacher for accepting the invitation. During the talk, Dr. Schumacher discussed in detail about the nitrogen fixing ability of diazotrophs films. He also briefed about the current scenario of the nitrogen crisis and its possible solutions through biotechnological approach. During the question-answer session, he interacted with all participants and answered all the questions raised in a very elaborative and informative way.

The webinar was organized by Dr. Shekhar Jain and coordinated by Ms. Ayushi Malik, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Life Science, Mandsaur University. At the end, Ms. Ayushi Malik expressed vote of thanks to the keynote speaker, head of the department and all the participants. In total 1364 participants from different states of India and from different countries get registered for the webinar.

   

 

Outcome: Increase in crop production can fulfill the demand of food in future. Such type of webinars is to make aware about the need of crop production enhancement for great development of India. Such type of Inter-national webinar also helps us to get exposure at national as well as international level. Positive feedbacks were received from all participants by various means like telephonic calls, WhatsApp messages, chat comments, feedback form and mails.

No. of participants: More than 436 participants including students, academicians, researchers and research scholars from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh. There are 1.8K views observed on our YouTube channel for this webinar.
