Brief description / remarks:
Public speaking is the art of diluting a two-minute idea with a two-hour vocabulary and it takes a lot more when it comes to an extempore. Extempore is an impromptu speech that is delivered with little or no preparation. Even though it is spontaneous, it requires great effort to deliver an extempore successfully.
With this intention in mind Faculty of Life Sciences has organized an Extempore Competition for First and Second year students of B. Sc (Hons) Biotechnology & Microbiology on 6th February 2021. The students were asked to pick up random chits for the sequence of participation and also for the topic being assigned. Every participant was given one minute precisely to think and three minutes to deliver the speech.
A few topics that were picked out at the events were:
- Is social media a boon or bane?
- Is the youth today victim of fashion?
- Global Warming
- Impact of COVID19 on our lives
- Indian farmers
- Swachh Bharat Mission
- The average age to get married
- If I were an animal I would be……
- Junk food – good or bad?
The judgment was based on the confidence, relevance and fluency. The first position was bagged by Divyam Joshi, B.Sc (Hons) Biotechnology I sem. Second and third position was secured by Shubham Devda, B.Sc (Hons) Biotechnology I sem and Swati Patidar, B.Sc (Hons) Biotechnology, IV sem respectively. Dr. Shekhar Jain, HOD, Life Sciences, encouraged and motivated the students by his words. The program was coordinated by Ms. Heena Shah Assistant Professor, Faculty of Life Science, Mandsaur University. All the faculty members have actively participated in the event.
This type of activity provides students a platform to develop communication skills, confidence, time management and enables them to think out of the box. The event was a great learning experience for the students as they learned to express their views and opinion spontaneously.
