Ayurveda is the ancient life science of Indian origin. It is the first ever fundamental systematic and scientific medical science known to mankind. Ayurveda is known as the sub treaty (Upa-Veda) of Atharva Veda. Atharva Veda is one of the four Authoritative texts called the Vedas. The basic principles of Ayurveda about life, nature, spirituality and medicine are derived from the refined knowledge. The fundamental principles and theorems of Ayurveda are time tested and evaluated. Hence despite of the change in time and lifestyle of the people, Ayurveda is still a relevant science of life.

Ayurveda has played a central role in the cure of diseases and ailments with help of natural herbs and therapies. It believes in curing the body first and then the disease for quality and longevity of life by natural ways of therapies like Panchakarma (detoxification) and Kaya Chikitsa (Healing and enkindling of Biological Fire). This way of Ayurveda therapy has established it as a safest and effective form of therapy offering perfect balance of mental, physical and spiritual health worldwide.

Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S) is the graduation course in Ayurvedic system of Medicine. After graduation in Ayurveda, Post Graduation course ‘M.D.’ can be done in different specialties. Doctorate course ‘Ph.D.’ is also available in many universities. Central Council of Indian Medicine, Delhi (under Ministry of Health and Family welfare, Department of AYUSH, Government of India) is the regulating authority for education in Ayurveda.

BAMS graduates after registration in state medical council can practice Ayurveda as a Doctor in his own clinic as well as in private hospitals. In Some states Allopathic Medicine is also allowed in practice. State governments as well as central government appoint Ayurvedic Doctors as Medical officers on Primary Health Center, Civil Hospitals and Different schemes under the department of Health and Family welfare. When appointment of Doctors is done through public service commission then it is Class One -Gazetted officer post. Ayurvedic doctors are also hired by Ayurvedic Pharma companies for various posts and private hospitals as medical officers , practitioners and specialist doctors.

MD (Ayurveda) doctors can practice as Specialist; also they are eligible for post of Assistant Professor in Ayurveda colleges. After sufficient experience they can be promoted to the post of Assistant professor and Professor. MD doctors can seek their career in research also. Government agencies like Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Science, Pharmacopoeia Commission of India etc appoints MD doctors for various researches in Ayurveda. In today’s age of commercialization, various Pharma- companies also hires Ayurvedic doctor for research in new drug development, as well as production and quality control of Ayurvedic medicines.

Ph.D. (Ayurveda) doctors are hired by various Government and private organizations for super-specialty medical services as well as research. Along with the globalization of knowledge and awareness of people towards Ayurveda, Panchakarma, Herbal medicine and Yoga; job opportunities and scope to development has highly increased for Ayurveda graduates.
