The Faculty of Life Science has organized a hands-on workshop entitled “Biological Indexing of Plant Viruses”

Department: Life Sciences Year/Semester: B.Sc. (Hons.) Microbiology Final Year
Activity: Hands-on Workshop
Date and Duration:  13th February, 2021.  11:10 AM  to 1:10 PM
Title:  Biological Indexing of Plant Viruses
Resource Person: Dr. Ashish Warghane, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Life Science, Mandsaur University, Mandsaur

Brief description/ Remarks:

Biological indexing using indicator plant is easy and cheapest technique for plant virus detection. In this technique, seedlings of indicator plant are inoculated by side graft / buds of tested plant. The inoculated seedlings are kept in controlled condition for the development of the symptoms at 25-30°C. Typical symptoms such as vein clearing, vein cupping and vein corking were developed after 3 to 4 months after inoculation. Conventionally, plant viruses have been detected & categorized by different biological indexing methods by inoculating the appropriate indicator host and observed the symptoms. The Faculty of Life Science has organized one day hand on workshop entitled “Biological Indexing of Plant Viruseson 13th February, 2021. The workshop was organized with the aim to make students learn about the indexing technique for the detection of plant viruses through symptoms expression.

Outcome:  All the participants actively participate in the workshop. They learn the very important technique for detection and symptoms expression of plant viruses in the field of plant pathology. The workshop was beneficial for the students who are making their mind to join Life Science based industry, research institute and diagnostic centers. Hands on workshop also help the student to pursue carrier in the field of Research and Development. Such type of workshops helps faculty of life science to grow and promote research.
